I See No Changes

I See No Changes

Many things have changed since the last time I have written an entry. Although a lot has changed, a lot is still the same. The biggest changes would be my working situation. I left the check cashing business (for my safety and for more money). I resumed full time work at Minelli’s Pizza, while occasionally helping out at the bar next door. It is more money and an overall easier job. Physically there was a lot more work, but mentally and safety concerns are not an issue there. Except for maybe my sanity and that of some of the others I work with, but I’m just saying.

This past Wednesday I was awoken to 13 missed calls on my cell phone. 7 from a number of which I did not know and 3 from my mother. The other 3 were from Eric, my sister, and another unknown number. I also had 5 voicemails. When I retrieved my voicemails I had 3 messages from a gentlemen by the name of Joe who was extremely interested in having me come in for an interview for a position he just recently had open up. The other two were from my mother and my sister, respectively, who were making sure I was alive since I had not answered my cell phone and Joe had apparently called them seeing as they were my emergency contacts back in October when I originally interviewed for a position with Joe’s company.

When I originally interviewed back in October, I was informed that there were 32 people who had interviewed for the position and only one position open. Unfortunately, that put the odds against me having not received the position at that time. Where I had interviewed at was actually a temp service, which at that time I was really pushing hard to obtain a position in the work field more tailored towards what I enjoyed. (But apparently there is not a big need for Elephant Trainers or People Who Only “Make Love” with Paraplegic Midgets, so I chose the computer industry.)

I returned Joe’s call and was asked to meet in New Albany in 30 minutes immediately for an interview. This was a little bit of an issue seeing as I live 45 + minutes away in Grove City. But I explained the situation and did my best to rush up there as quickly as I could so as to not loose a chance at the job again. I was able to make it by 1:15 pm, just as soon as Joe had also arrived to interview with me and the company he was representing at the time. After a very brief 10 minute interview I was informed I would receive a call later that informed me of their decision. I was a little worried at first because of how brief the interview was, but yet I do know I did my best and fulfilled the answers to the questions in which they asked me. It was in their hands now.

I had been on the road no more then 10 minutes when my cell phone rang and it was Joe thanking me for showing up on such short notice to meet with him and the others. I was a little worried thinking he was going to tell me that I just wasted time by driving all the way up there. To my surprise and astonishment he said, “We will see you Monday morning at 8am!” I was flabbergasted I had no idea that I would actually get the job. After such a brief meeting that I had with them, and the professional dressed, scruffy 5 o’clock shadow look that I had been able to clean up to in the 5 minutes before I ran out the door to head up there.

Now I am excited. Today was actually my first day and I couldn’t have been more pleased with everything that had taken place. I am working at E. M. H. &T. as a Data Entry Clerk. E. M. H. &T. is the largest engineering firm in the state of Ohio. Currently the project I am working on is for the City of Columbus. I am taking all the cities water and sewage maps and getting them transferred into the computer databases. Then I will have to switch them from the original maps to a query database. After that I will be getting with our engineers in order to assist them in the development of new plans for the city’s sewer and water system. I am guaranteed at least a year with the temp service to have this position, at which time I can either be hired on full time by E. M. H. & T. or I will have to find another job.

The experience alone will be worth it. I have been trying to at least get my foot in the door at an entry level position with a well established company. It gives me an opportunity to finally prove I know what I know. Although I do not want to work for someone else the rest of my life, I need a good job where I can save up the money to “fulfill my dreams”.

I think that is enough rambling on for now. There will be another update very shortly since there is so much more I want to and need to say about all kinds of things. But until next time… “Have a good day, neighbor!” – Mr. Rogers
